Super Useful Fashion Blog Photography Tips

Happy Wednesday.  After many years of working on my photography skills and becoming a better fashion blogger, I feel confident enough to put together a post that will help all of you who may need some extra advice and tips for your fashion blog.  So, for today, I am sharing photography tips for a fashion blogger.   We will talk about everything from camera settings to editing software.  This will be a quick overview of the settings I use and what I love and don’t love about fashion blogging photography.

FASHION BLOG PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

 Camera

I highly recommend a DSLR camera.  I shoot with a Canon 80D and I absolutely love my camera.  It is not full frame, but I think for the price, this camera can’t be beat.  I recommend a Canon 5omm F/1.8 lens.  This is the lens that will give you that perfect blurred background.

Camera Settings

I highly recommend a photography class that will help you learn Manual mode.  I took Rob Andrew’s photo class in San Diego.  He helped me master the manual mode on my camera.  Once you know how to shoot in Manual mode, there are a few things that I focus on for my settings. 1. The light.  I like a little overexposed photos.  This means you have to let in more light into your photos.  Basically, you want the light above 0. I could go into detail on this, but that’s a whole post all by itself.  2. The white balance.   Cooler photos are typically more appealing to readers.  That’s where your white balance comes in.  I never shoot on AWB.  I  adjust the white balance to give me that cooler setting.  Play around with this and see what you like best.  Your options are shade, cloudy and direct sun.  Choose the setting based on your scene and what will be consistent with your content.

Background

I just started working on this.  I highly suggest choosing what color palette you want for your blog.  Since I like overexposed photos I have realized I need gray or light colored backgrounds.  I need to avoid yellow undertones and bold colors.  This helps me keep my Instagram feed and my blog posts consistent.  Also, avoid direct sun.  Shoot first thing in the morning, right before sunset or in the shade.  This gives you more control over your light and your white balance.

Editing

I used to love photoshop. I mean, I would never pay a monthly fee for Lightroom.  Then a month ago, I gave Lightroom a shot.  I am ADDICTED.  For reals. The adjustments that you can make to the light are just better.   I think it’s more sensitive with the adjustments, in turn, giving you more control.

Blog Design

I’m not sure if this should be number 1 or number 4… But, your blog design will hugely impact your photo quality.  If you didn’t notice, I just redesigned my blog.  The new design allows me to upload much better photos.  The quality before was very grainy and all around just crappy.  Be sure to choose a blog design that has a photo focus, not a content focus.  This will give you the best quality images once you upload them to your site.

The best thing you can do to get your photography game up is to practice.  Take pictures of your family and friends.  Work at it.  If you have recruited your hubs to take your pictures, learn how to use the camera and teach him.  Set it up for him and let him practice.  The hubs and I have worked together to master the pictures on the blog.

What about you? Do you have any fashion blog photography tips you want to share?

Great tips! Luckily, my dad shoots my photos but I really need to learn how to shoot on manual on my own even though he’s tried to teach me several times! Ha.

Rare opportunity of an empty spot inside @disneyla Rare opportunity of an empty spot inside @disneyland and just wishing we could get a reservation to see the new Toontown
SoCal residents have you ever visited a mission? M SoCal residents have you ever visited a mission? Mission ⛪
Last week we visited our 3rd mission. This is taking it back to @oldmissionsb which we loved. My daughter was obsessed with learning about Karana from “Island of the Blue Dolphin” If your child is in 4th grade take them to check out a few missions. It’s a part of their curriculum and they can learn so much from the way the Spanish operated here in SoCal in the late 1700’s-1800’s. Of course not every detail of this settlement was positive, but it’s a great opportunity to have discussions and educate your children about the indigenous people and the Spanish settlers.
AND don’t forget 4th graders can get the national parks pass with Every Kid Outdoors. Link in stories.
