The Holidays In San Diego
I thought it would be fun to share my top picks for things to do in San Diego during the holidays. I absolutely love my hometown—there’s so much to see and do this time of year. The only thing missing is snow!
This little list will keep you busy and fill up your weekends with holiday cheer. Even better, many of these events are free!Who doesn’t love a little festive fun that doesn’t break the bank?
December Nights at Balboa Park
We have been to this in the past, and it was such a blast! I definitely recommend getting there early—it gets very busy. We arrived a little late and spent forever parking and catching the shuttle to the park.
Once you’re there, though, it’s completely worth it. The museums offer free admission, there are tons of food trucks, live entertainment, and so many festive sights to enjoy. It’s one of the biggest holiday events in San Diego and a local favorite for a reason.
One of the Many Boat Parades
Did you know almost every bay and harbor in San Diego County hosts a boat parade? You can usually watch right from the shore—for free!
Last year, we were lucky enough to hitch a ride on a friend’s boat in Mission Bay and had so much fun watching the boats glide by all decked out in twinkling lights. Such a unique and classic San Diego holiday experience.
Local Christmas Parades
The Encinitas and La Jolla Christmas parades are both fantastic options. Gather your family, grab lunch or dinner nearby, and watch the streets come alive with music, lights, and local spirit. Nothing gets you into the holiday mood quite like a small-town parade by the coast.
San Diego Botanic Garden Lightscapes
This is one of my absolute favorite events of the season. The gardens transform into a winter wonderland with holiday lights, carriage rides, live music, tasty treats, and hot cocoa.
We went last year and had such a magical time—we’ll definitely be making it back again this year.
Ice Skating at Hotel Del Coronado
Can you believe I’ve lived here my whole life and have never gone ice skating at the Hotel Del? This will be my first year, and I’m so excited! There’s nothing more uniquely “San Diego” than ice skating on the beach while watching the sunset.
I’ll report back after we go, but it’s already high on my holiday must-do list.
Holiday Shopping Around Town
San Diego’s shopping centers go all-out for the holidays! Many feature live music, beautiful decorations, and delicious food.
One of my favorites is The Headquarters in Downtown San Diego. It’s the perfect spot to get all your gifts in one place and treat yourself to something yummy—like pizza from Flour & Barley followed by gelato from Gelato Paradiso. You’ll leave with your shopping done and your sweet tooth satisfied!
Festive Holiday Bars
Check out one of the many decorated restaurants and bars in San Diego. Barbarella, Miracle at Brickmans, Rancho Bernardo Inn, InsideOUT and many more.
We have so many amazing ways to celebrate the holidays here in San Diego. Whether you’re watching boats light up the harbor, sipping cocoa at the gardens, or skating by the sea, it’s a reminder of how special our city really is.
