How To Organize Your Closet For A Small Space

Hi Fashionistas. Happy Hump Day. Since we are all still in some sort of social distancing, I thought we could talk about organization. If you are like me you have Marie Kondo’d your whole house. The last thing I had to tackle was my closet. I have been holding off, because we are trying to buy a house and I really hate our closet space. But, I figured there are many of us probably in a similar situation. So, today I am talking how to organize your closet for a small space.

Make Your Piles

Step 1 is to get everything out. Go through your closet and create piles that are love and will wear often, the donates and the trash. When you are making these piles really think about if you have worn it in the last year. Does it fit, is it clean or does it have stains. If it has any issues donate or toss it.

Sort by Season

Of course we all would love to have a beautiful massive master closet, but if you are like me it’s not an option. So, I have to work with what I have. By investing in under bed storage bins, I can swap out seasonal wardrobe pieces to free up space in my closet. I am really selective of the items that go in there. They really have to be a print or item that I just can’t pull off in the opposite season. The classic pieces that can go all year long go in the closet all of the time. When the time comes you just swap out the clothes.

Organize

I sort my closet by color and cut. Going from left to right dark to light. Within each color the shirts will go from long sleeve to short sleeve. All sweaters, cotton tees, and workout wear are folded on a shelf. I have the tiered hangers for all of my pants and they are organized by denim and slacks. When you are limited on space, there is no option to keeping clothes you will not wear. Also, you want to be organized so you can find everything.

Extras

My final suggestion to organize your closet in a small space is to find ways for extra storage and things that will save space. I have a storage ottoman at the foot of my bed that is a great storage. It holds all of my winter beanies, scarves and gloves and it serves as a great place to put on shoes and for my kids to hang out when I am getting ready. Also, over the door shoe storage is another great option.
