Travel Guide to Charleston

Travel Guide To Charleston South Carolina featured by Popular Family Travel Blog, The Fashionista Momma; photo collage of things to do in Charleston South Carolina.

Hi Lovelies.  More city guides for you, coming up with this guide to Charleston.  This adventure was the girls and I joining the hubs on a work trip.  So, we didn’t choose the hotel and we stayed at the hotel that they were having all of their meetings.  It was a great spot, but I called a friend that lives in Charleston to ask her a little about some hotels in Charleston and these were the ones that look pretty perfect, The Spectator and The Vendue.  So, if you are heading to Charleston definitely check them out.

Drayton Hall

 drayton-hall

Let me start with, I am a total nerd, and this was awesome.  We did the whole tour of Drayton Hall.  If you have really fidgety kids, this may not be the best choice.  It is a very old house and they do ask that you not touch anything.  It’s empty, but it’s all about the architecture and the details.  I was in awe.  I think I took a picture in every room.  The girls even stood against a door rail that had all of the measurements of the children that lived there.  We learned so much, for example, why plantations have the long driveways lined with tall trees.  They were designed to keep the flow of air moving towards the house. Natural air conditioning!

 Magnolia Plantation

The Magnolia Plantation was gorgeous.  We jumped in and toured the inside of the house, but we also toured the gardens.  They are all beautiful.  It is green, lush and just perfect.  The house sits just off center of a long driveway surrounded by these gardens.  There is also a cute petting zoo and a really cool swamp.  We didn’t venture out on the swamp, but we did stop at the edge for a photo opp.

 Fort Sumter

Fort Sumter was a great place to explore. It’s located on Sullivan’s island, which is incredible in itself.  You will walk through the old bunkers and tunnels throughout the fort.   When you make it to the top, you can see all the canons stationed to protect the shoreline.  This was a great place to visit for the husband and the kids.  The girls loved wandering through the tunnels and following their dad into the unknown.

Waterfront Park

The last stop on my travel guide to Charleston is waterfront park.  This is a great little area with open grass, and piers with swings.  It’s a great way to spend the early evening enjoying the end of the day sun.  Swing by Belgian Gelato on your way back to your hotel and it’s the perfect evening.

Eateries

Toast – Amazing breakfast place.  Try the french toast.  Recommended by the New York Times and it so good.

Poes Tavern – We heard the best burger in town.  We tried to go, but they were doing renovations when we were on our trip.  So, it will be on my list for the next trip.

Coast Bar & Grill – Great prices with a lot of different and unique seafood items.  They do have chicken and steak options as well as a kids menu.

Hall’s Chophouse – Really good food and a great atmosphere.  I really liked this restaurant.  They have a kids menu, and from what I have heard, the best shrimp and grits in town.  I can’t vouch for it since I don’t eat seafood, but it’s coming from a trusted source.  So, try it out and let me know what you think.

Amen Street Fish and Raw Bar – Fish and Oyster menu changes daily, but I would say do this one as date night.  This was also a recommendation from a friend because, again, I don’t do fish.

Belgian Gelato – Really good Gelato and two options to choose from, either the waterfront or downtown Charleston.  The gelato was really rich, my girls couldn’t even finish a small serving.  So, it’s definitely something to share.

Rare opportunity of an empty spot inside @disneyla Rare opportunity of an empty spot inside @disneyland and just wishing we could get a reservation to see the new Toontown
SoCal residents have you ever visited a mission? M SoCal residents have you ever visited a mission? Mission ⛪
Last week we visited our 3rd mission. This is taking it back to @oldmissionsb which we loved. My daughter was obsessed with learning about Karana from “Island of the Blue Dolphin” If your child is in 4th grade take them to check out a few missions. It’s a part of their curriculum and they can learn so much from the way the Spanish operated here in SoCal in the late 1700’s-1800’s. Of course not every detail of this settlement was positive, but it’s a great opportunity to have discussions and educate your children about the indigenous people and the Spanish settlers.
AND don’t forget 4th graders can get the national parks pass with Every Kid Outdoors. Link in stories.
